More often than not, hiring the disabled is considered as compassionate hiring which is just a euphemism for charity. One could not be more wrong. It makes perfect business sense to hire disabled person, because you will get an honest, dedicated and a passionate performer.
Moreover, the attrition rates are abysmally low which directly affects your hiring expense. It increases the morale of the rest of the workforce to be part of a diverse work environment that encourages openness. Hospitality, housekeeping, restaurants, home delivery, courier pick ups, reception and other back end services have been traditionally looked at areas where people with mental disabilities can be hired.
Manufacturing has also provided an opportunity where simple tasks can be carried out. The IT, BPO, App Development sector has been integrating people who have movement or speech related disability. All you need is an open mind, effective training approach and a sensitized workforce that accepts diversity.
The articles by Anoop Jaipurkar talk about how inclusion in mainstream workplace helps building confidence in people with disabilities. PeopleWiz Consulting strongly supports this sentiment and takes efforts to have this as a hiring strategy.
Hardworking, honest & efficient, these young men show the way.
People with disabilities need respect & work, not sympathy
With the Rights of Persons with Disabilities (RPD) bill, that is currently pending in parliament, job reservations for the disabled will become mandatory across companies. Its time to accept a new reality where disability is not considered a handicap but an opportunity to be different and revel in it.
